UNSPSC Classification
Map industrial materials to UNSPSC — United Nations Standard Products and Services Code — with AI-assisted classification and human review for uncertain materials.
Four-level classification hierarchy.
| Level | Example (Gate Valve) |
|---|---|
| Segment | 40 — Distribution and Conditioning Systems |
| Family | 40.14 — Valves |
| Class | 40.14.16 — Globe and gate and check valves |
| Commodity | 40.14.16.13 — Gate valves |
UNSPSC and your material master.
Is UNSPSC a replacement for my internal material code?+
No. UNSPSC classifies products and services in a shared external hierarchy — it does not replace an organisation's own internal material identifier or short description. Both serve different purposes.
Does every material need a UNSPSC code?+
Not necessarily. UNSPSC classification is most valuable for procurement analytics, spend categorisation and cross-organisation benchmarking. Your organisation's priorities will determine scope.
What version of UNSPSC does VCode use?+
VCode includes UNSPSC version 26. Classification is supported at commodity level where descriptions provide sufficient information.
What happens if a classification is uncertain?+
Low-confidence classifications are flagged for human review rather than accepted automatically. VCode distinguishes between what AI can determine and what requires human judgment.
